How to Become a Professional Soccer Player

Do you love the game of soccer and are good at playing it? Becoming a professional soccer player takes skill, ambition, and lots and lots of practice. Practice makes professionals. Here are a few steps you can take to be on your way to becoming a Professional Soccer Player. To be a professional, you need to be an exceptional footballer. There are plenty of “pretty good” players out there, but you can’t afford to be one of them. The bottom line is, if you’re great, you’ll make it. I will give you a couple of good tips that will help you fulfill your dream of becoming a professional soccer player.

If you are keen to become a professional football or soccer player and you’ve already spent some years training and doing really well playing, this article sets out some key steps to take if you’re headed down the professional football path. It’s important to be realistic from the outset, however, as this is a very competitive sport where few players make it to the top, given the limited places available. A lot of your hope needs to be tempered by the challenges of the odds of succeeding, as well as constantly rechecking your resolve. The steps in this article are but a directional starting point–all the hard work is going to be down to you, the hopeful professional football player.

Step 1.  You will need to know football inside out. From the start, learn as much about the game as possible. This means learning from books, watching matches, training, participating in matches, and talking to good football players about their tactics and the things that they have found most or least successful as they have climbed the ranks. Read about famous soccer players and what they have done to succeed, look at their training programs and routines.  Exercise and keep yourself in shape. The more you know the better off you will be.

Step 2. Commit to playing football through graduated levels. Choose a school team, local club, or district team that you can attend regularly and that has a good coach. Start early and let your skills develop. Each country, state, or region will have its own club or team expectations and progression levels, look and learn from other teams. Follow these simple steps:

  • Start playing as young as possible. Shift to playing in organized youth teams sometime between the ages of 6 and 13. Play in school and when you get home.
  • Continue playing for a school and small club team every year, progressing to more competitive and selective teams every change up, play with players a couple of years older than you. They can give you tips and improve your skills.
  • Train regularly and get involved in organized games as early as possible. Try to get into matches and tournaments that represent your school, region, state or country at youth level. Attend training camps as early as possible. If your club or association of clubs offers training camps, summer camps, etc., make use of these.

After playing for school teams and other smaller clubs try out for a bigger team, like a big collage or a state club, and then to amateur and semi-professional level teams and clubs. If you’re in the USA, aim to get into a college that has a top football program in place. You have to move from the smaller soccer clubs to the big teams, just work hard and keep climbing up.

Step 3. Hard work and be patient are very important. It takes dedication and a lot of hard work to become the best. If your single focus is to be a professional football player, this hard work is essential. If you want to play at the professional level you will have to be patient – being able to accept that turning professional is a gradual process during which you continue to learn, to build your technical skills, football knowledge, and importantly, making good contacts with other people. The more people you get in contact with the better.

Soccer-Practice

  • Becoming the best player, you will need to dedicate time to practicing almost every single day. 7 days a week 365 days a year at least an hour each day. Whatever the weather, you’ll need to keep practicing, all.  It is the practice, the daily dedication that will develop your talent, and hone your skills the best. Don’t let anything get in your way; make practice your number one priority.
  • Train with a small tennis ball. I know this sound weird but training with a tennis ball will improve your skills a lot. This is a tip i got from a  soccer expert. Your control and eye coordination will become excellent. Work with the ball until everything you do with it seems like second nature. Work on your weaker skills too, in order to strengthen your overall skills-set and adaptability. Make yourself a prefect overall player.

Your own level of dedication must be enormous, give it all you got and do not waste anytime.

Step 4. Be exceptional. After you’ve had a chance to play for a while, it’s time to start seriously looking at your skills. Find out what position best fits you and your style of play. In professional football there is a ton of competition no room for second best. Make sure you shoot for the number one spot. Think about the team and how you can best fit in and make a big impact.

  • Seek your coach’s honest opinion about your strengths and your chances, and learn from your coach’s suggestions about possible ways to improve your natural talent. In this step it is key not to argue, just listen to your coach. Write down the suggestions and a plan for yourself, and make sure you improve what your coach suggested.
  • Be a top performer on your team; make sure that you are the best in the level that you’re playing at now. If you’re not, make an honest assessment as to whether you can improve this. Train one on one with the best players, ask them for tips. Set a goal to become better than them.

Prove that you’re good in games. This means consistent proof – show that you can deliver every week every game, not just once in a while. If you’re the outstanding player of the week every week, you’re on the right track. Give every game everything thing you got. Help your team win, be a good overall player.

Step 5. Be aware of what a football scout is looking for. Even though you should already be showing top dedication, excellent performance, and good behavior during games, it’s helpful to know what scouts look out for when they’re scouting for top talent in football. After all, they might appear at any time to check out your team. Basically, a scout will watch your entire attitude, not just your ball play, meaning that you will be watched for character as much as talent. Professional recruiters want someone who is ambitious and is a team player. They want someone who will be an asset to their home team.

As such, concentrate on:

  • Showing your team spirit. A good football player will be a team player, helping team mates.
  • Showing your ambition. Be competitive without being arrogant or mean-spirited. Treat other players the way you want to be treated.
  • Showing how you can remain calm and focused under pressure.
  • Be prepared to relocate

Most importantly, be patient! Practice your football tactics. Understand that you probably won’t be recruited overnight. Practice when you get the chance. Strive to make contacts and give it your all each time you play. To be a professional, you need to be an exceptional footballer. There are plenty of “pretty good” players out there, but you can’t afford to be one of them. The bottom line is, if you’re great, you’ll make it.
